Souad Massi
This Algerian-born musician allies a golden voice with a sparkling personality. Souad Massi has invented a delicately harmonious Algerian folk-rock sound, and backed it with humanist, sensitive lyrics. Born in Algiers on August 23rd 1972, Massi is from a family of artists. She knew she would be a singer from an early age. As a little girl she studied classical Arab-Andalusian music, music theory and universal classical music. These years of study have moulded her into a rigorous composer with a keen sense of instrumentation. The four albums Massi released between 2001 and 2007 have been greeted by popular and commercial success.
Deb (AZ/Universal)
For her second album Souad Massi has made a few of her dreams come true. Uniting the rhythm of the tablas and Arabo-Andalusian melodies or sprinkling her poignant whispers with traces of cello or violin sparks, these rich sounds find themselves wonderfully at home in her intimate universe. On one or two occasions slightly sticky-sweet arrangements break into the fragile dialogue, creating a universe of somewhat pastel colours. But for the most part her clear deep voice goes straight to the wounds of the soul with a breath of comfort.
